All you need to know about the Rolex Datejust; An Informative guide to current and vintage Datejust's

We are going to talk about possibly the best watch Rolex has ever created. The Rolex Datejust! Join us as we cover the history of these sought after Datejusts.

The first ever Rolex Datejust

The first ever Rolex Datejust was introduced in 1945 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Rolex. This watch was crowned the reference number 4467 and had humble and standard case size of 36mm, The Datejust was the first self winding watch to host a date wheel and set the standard with its complication. 4467 had a fluted bezel, Jubilee bracelet and only came in 18k gold, which would have made the watch an icon and inaccessible to most people.

In 1950, Rolex finally gave the public what they wanted. 5030 and 5031, a stainless steel Datejust and a two-tone steel and gold configuration. Not only has this elevated the innovation of the Datejust model, but also the aesthetic and accessibility.

Did you know?
Did you know that the 5-link Jubilee bracelet was introduced in 1945 as well?

It was exclusively designed for the Rolex Datejust and Rolex even came close to naming that watch itself Jubilee. Today you can find the bracelet on the GMT, Sky-dweller and the Datejust.

The Rolex Datejust 16XX, Pre-Quick-Set Datejust

In the 1950s Rolex introduced caliber 1560 which solidified the Datejust model in the catalogue and history. The model produced and sold today barely differs from those sold in the late 50s. You can still find the 1613 and 1614 in the market today, they are a memorable icon in Rolexes history and many.

Later on Rolex released the 160XX and finally introduced the quick-set feature. A feature that allows the wear to set the date without altering the time, a feature that can be found on all Rolexes produced today. Many pre-quick-set owners understand the frustration that it can bring, especially towards the end of February.

The Classic Datejust

In the late 70s Rolex finally introduced the 162XX, this model features a upgraded 3135 movement that has better time keeping, power reserve and overall performance as a watch. The 162XX also has a upgraded glass, sapphire crystal instead of the acrylic glass, that tends to scratch.
This watch is known for being a the perfect mix of vintage and performance, it can preforms like any other Rolex, comes with a vintage look and you can often find them in exceptional condition. Not to mention the affordability.

Rolex introduced the Datejust 2 in 2009, to meet the demand for larger watches, the Datejust 2 feature a 41mm case size and could only be found with an oyster bracelet. Unlike the Datejust 36 which was available with either bracelet. The Datejust 2 was available in Oyster steel with a smooth bezel, steel and white gold with a fluted bezel and yellow gold and oyster steel with a fluted bezel, the Datejust 2 came under the reference number 116300, 116334 and 116333.
